One of various band projects for guitarist Erik Rutan (also Hate Eternal, ex-Morbid Angel), Alas are a rather unusual, avant-garde d**h metal project highlighted by the piercing vocals of soprano Martina Astner (nee Hornbacher), formerly of Dreams of Sanity and Korova. Also counting with the presence of ba**ist Scott Hornick and drummer Howard Davis, Alas made their recorded debut with 2001's Absolute Purity album, which contradicted its title with the rather flawed results within.
